Interfaith Service to End Gun Violence

Protect Minnesota’s Interfaith Alliance for Gun Safety invites you to an

Interfaith Service to End Gun Violence

Sunday, July 17, 2016
6:30pm — Service, followed by reception
8:00pm — Introduction to the Interfaith Alliance for Gun Safety

Lutheran Church of the Redeemer
285 Dale St N, in St. Paul

There has been such terrible news involving gun violence these past weeks. The police shooting deaths of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile, the craven mass murder of five police officers in Dallas, ambush attacks on police officers around the country and the unimaginable shootings of toddlers in Minneapolis have been overwhelming and deeply distressing. Our community and country have been torn apart.

In response, Protect Minnesota’s Interfaith Alliance for Gun Safety is sponsoring an Interfaith Service to End Gun Violence on Sunday, July 17, 2016. It will be hosted by Lutheran Church of the Redeemer in St. Paul. By The Rivers Multi-Faith Learning and Lifecycle Center will be a co-sponsor, and we invite other faith communities to
co-sponsor as well.

The service will begin at 6:30pm. It will include gospel music, prayers by a Jewish cantor and the tolling of a bell for those killed by gun fire in recent weeks, including Philando Castile and the police officers who were murdered in Dallas. Clergy are invited to vest and arrive by 6:15pm for the procession. A reception will follow.

Of course, our prayers alone will not bring change; we need to act. After the service (8pm) all are invited to a presentation about the Interfaith Alliance for Gun Safety and what people of faith can do right now to help bring an end to gun violence.

If you’d like to volunteer or your faith community would be interested in co-sponsoring the service, contact us at [email protected]

Protect Minnesota is the only independent, state-based organization devoted to gun violence prevention in Minnesota. Our goal is to create safe homes, safe schools, safe workplaces, safe houses of worship, and safe communities. We support common sense legislation that will keep guns out of the hands of dangerous and suicidal individuals and prevent the unintentional injury and death of children. We take a public health approach to gun violence, recognizing that the solution to this epidemic will be a combination of legislation, litigation, education, community investment, and changing societal expectations around gun ownership.  We formed the Interfaith Alliance for Gun Safety because faith communities working together are the most powerful agents for change in Minnesota.
