We are hiring. The Director of Outreach and Organizing at Protect Minnesota (PM) oversees the development and implementation of projects and programs to engage key audiences for gun violence prevention in Minnesota.
Comprehensive background checks would prevent prohibited buyers from purchasing a gun. This legislation would close the loophole that allows those who can’t legally purchase a gun from doing so anyway from a private dealer.
Minnesota currently only has child access prevention laws which are only applied after tragedies have occurred. Requiring secure storage of firearms would help prevent accidents and other fatalities.
Researchers estimate that nationwide, over 380,000 guns are stolen from private citizens annually. Laws requiring reporting can make us all safer.
Investing in young people from neighborhoods with heightened levels of community violence can reduce the likelihood that they get caught up in violent cycles.
Nationwide, only 46% of gun homicides result in an arrest. Increased funding and more investigators and data analysts could help increase Minnesota’s investigation clearance rates and help deliver the protection and justice that communities deserve.
